Mainly because Unix is so prevalent and knowing your way around a bash shell is considered a lot more generally useful than knowing cmd and PowerShell. Or Pc For Java Development Software Up ToAdditionally Homebrew, dpkg, apt or deb provide better package management for keeping software up to date. The toolchain is simply cleaner and more robust on Unix systems. Finally if youre already on a Mac theres no reason to switch unless someone can give you a seriously good reason, like if you really want to get into C and.NET stuff. I work for a.NET shop. We all have mbps running windows VMs so even then its really not mandatory. Continue this thread level 2 4 points 3 years ago If you want to get into c just use.net core and you are fine on macLinux:) There are some parts not supported but these things are just edge cases. Other problems are open source libraries but these are getting updated bit by bit Continue this thread level 2 Comment deleted by user 3 years ago Continue this thread level 1 10 points 3 years ago If youre going to do any programming for Apple products, youll need the macbook for XCode. Also I found that things such as visual studio, and Unity just ran better and felt better on windows. Additionally, you typically get much more hardware for your money when you buy a windows based computer. Having to restart my machine just to use photoshop, stick the image file on a shared drive, and then reboot so I have access to it, is horrible workflow. So I got a Mac, and now I have the best of a Unix-based toolchain, with the ability to run things like Photoshop without an issue. ![]() Continue this thread level 2 3 points 3 years ago False on the easy bit. Assuming youre not, professors prefer Unix-based systems (i.e. Linux and Mac). The Unix system is better for programming in many ways. There are lots of things with bash that make it more programmer friendly, especially SSH (which is a way of using the command line on another computer remotely). ![]() The lab computers we used at my university were always Linux machines except in the case we used a Windows-only software, which was extremely rare. All of my professors used Mac or Linux (very few used Linux), except when they used Windows-only software (which was basically if they used a tablet to write the lectures). I use a Mac, but all my teachers and most of my peers use Windows. I get along fine but sometimes I have to find my own way if the teachers preferred IDE compiler isnt available on Mac. Or Pc For Java Development Code To StartI was working in c last semester and I was usually fine, but ran in to one assignment where the teacher gave us some code to start with that included windows specific functions and I had to use boot camp to finish the project. Neither of the IDEs my instructor worked with were available for Mac so I ended up compiling all my code in the command line with g.
